MINNA TERVAMÄKI
SE2
Human yearning to be free of the tight roles and painful arrangements is very strong, but who creates these prisons we inhabit? Are the frameworks limiting our lives real, or do they take form through the illusions we have constructed for ourselves? In SE2, these themes become concrete in the shape of a skirt of iron forming a prison and dragging us down towards the ground like lead. Little by little, creativity and lightness begin to sprout life in a surreal play that stretches the dancer’s limbs to unprecedented lengths. Tervamäki transports the viewer close to the moment when flowing movement that defies categorisation is born, and something intriguing, new, and fresh takes root. But will we have the courage to stand on our own feet if we manage to let go of the old and be free?
This ambiguous work has themes that are highly relevant to Minna Tervamäki. Its original version, Something Else (2005), was the choreographer’s first piece. SE2 won’t necessarily ever become static; it will live again and again through versions taking shape in its diverse interpretations.

Whirls of the magic skirt
The stage presence of Minna Tervamäki is imbued with will and emotion. Superiority potentiated through pain and adversity.
SE2, Something Else 2, is a solo work by Minna Tervamäki for a magic skirt and dancer. The choreography plays around with the skirt’s possibilities. The crinoline’s frame is a tent, a cover, a hideout, a shield, a prison, space junk.
The musical compilation transports the functional steel frame from one mood to another. The trained back opens up as a living map of the diversity of the human anatomy.
